Jason is confidant, brave, and determined, but under his stoic exterior there is a deep wound that has yet to heal.
Physical Description:
Tall, like all Spartan-IIs, standing roughly the same height as John. His lean, muscular body is covered with scars of battles past and his skin is a ghostly white. Like, ginger white (minus the freckles). His dirty blonde hair is tapered from a near-skin buzz on the sides and back to nearly the maximum regulation length (roughly three inches) on top with bangs that were actually a bit longer, but it stays out of his eyes and on a passing glance looks acceptable. His face is framed by a strong jawline. His kind, nearly flawless looking artificial hazel eyes are crowned by a slightly protruding brow that makes his eye sockets seem a little darker, almost as if he wore a very light permanent coat of eye shadow. He wears his age well, but even then the weight of his experiences shows in the thin wrinkles gaining hold of his face.
Biography: On the Spartan-II's "mission" that had wiped out half of their numbers (their augmentation procedure), Jason-923 had been rendered blind from a complication with the optical augmentation. He had a negative reacted to the serum when his body rejected the treatment and the nerve endings both inside of his eyes and those progressing back to his brain had become inflamed and permanently damaged. Had it not been for the top medical team aboard the Atlas, he would have likely died. Due to the extent of his condition and the limits of technology at that point, coupled with the strict budget for the program that was already passed, he had been a washout. At the ceremony to honor their fallen, Jason had been present and, while not able to see and suffering from a headache that not even meds could dull, he had heard and felt every thump as the metal cylinders containing their ashes had been launched from the ship.
With every cylin.. no. With every one of his family that was fired off into space, a searing jolt of pain struck him, causing his head to feel like it was being pried open from the inside and what was left of his eyes to burn as if consumed by Gehenna (((By the way, Hellfire, this might be a word you would be interested in... It's Biblical, too! I actually used it as a screenname for a short stint.))) itself. Every fiber of his being wanted to curl up in a writhing mess of pain and anger, but the tangible effects of his failure couldn't compare to the utter despair that filled his and every other Spartan in that room's soul. He stood straight and steady to show strength and honor for his brethren. A little bit of all of them died that day and left them all changed.
After many hours demanding retention with Dr. Halsey and CPO Mendez, Jason had convinced them to allow Deja to include him in the surviving Spartan's training regiments. Everything he was still capable of doing, he did with 110%. He wouldn't be able to perform any more missions, but he could still be there with them and scan radio transmissions while they were on-target to watch their backs in whatever way he could.
Even before their microgravity training post-augmentation, the Spartan recruits had been given material to study on flight training. Jason listened to his audio tapes over and over, thoroughly fascinated by the theory, concepts, and laws of flight. His fascination rooted from a childhood fascination he had had with the birds that frequented his home on Earth before he had been conscripted into the UNSC. As he would work out study alongside his fellow Spartans, he would review and study material pertinent to specific aircraft ranging on topic from their specifications and limitations to their tolerances and configurations.
Prior to the "second class" of Spartan IIs, a medical breakthrough in optical prosthetics gave him the chance of a lifetime: the chance to have his vision back. Without thinking twice about the risk of serious brain damage the experimental surgery presented, Jason applied for the implants and was granted authority by Dr. Halsey, who had been keeping a close eye on progress in medical technology and potential candidates (both living and those that were deceased but stored in cryo in the hopes of future resuscitation) for corrective surgery and reintroduction to the Spartan program.
During training, Jason's aptitude for flight became apparent immediately and he was later sent to train on piloting and operation on all forms of aircraft ranging from rotary wing and other VTOL aircraft, to bridge crew navigation of starships. Relative to the other Spartan-IIs, his prowess in aviation went above and beyond.
In an analysis by an ONI scientist tasked to track his progress, Jason was noted to have a sort of "sixth sense" possibly derived from his time relying on senses other than vision. Tests were inconclusive on any proof of said sense, however, and investigations on the topic were discontinued. The edge the supposed extrasensory adaption added seemed to be more intuition than anything else.
After the Great War, Jason was folded into the ranks of Spartan-IVs and served as an instructor aboard the Infinity on all manner of things, but was appointed Spartan Liaison following his commission to Ensign. He had seen scout and combat flight time during his term aboard the Infinity and was noted for his tendency to efficiently accomplish the mission above expectations.
